Friday December 21, 2007, the Blue Hall of the Capsa Restaurant in Bucharest hosted the annual meeting between transplanted patients and Romtransplant Association and the National Transplant Agency, at the initiative of the Association of Transplanted Patients of Romania.
The meeting benefited from the presence of Prof. Dr. Irinel Popescu, President of Romtransplant and of the National Transplant Agency, Prof. Dr. Mihai Lucan, vice-president, Prof. Dr. Radu Deac, vice-president, Prof. Dr. Mihai Voiculescu, General Secretary of Romtransplant, Dr. Victor Zota, General Secretary of the National Transplant Agency and over 30 members of the press. The speakers underlined the important progresses achieved in organizing transplant activities, expressed by an improved financing of transplantation, by an increase in the number of transplants with cadaveric donor, by an increase in the survival rates (Prof. Dr. Irinel Popescu), by the introduction of new surgical techniques, by a better use of the existing organs, by a better regional organization and material equipment (Prof. Dr. Radu Deac), by a better management of patients on the waiting list for liver, kidney or pancreas transplantation (Prof. Dr. Mihai Voiculescu) and by a better administration of resources (Dr. Victor Zota).
An important issue that was discussed is the problem of improving the existing legislation in order to increase the number of cadaveric donors by introducing presumed consent (Prof. Dr. Irinel Popescu).
The conclusions were presented by Prof. Dr. Irinel Popescu and Prof. Dr. Mihai Lucan, who assessed that in 207 Romanian transplantation achieved important progresses. Prof. Mihai Voiculescu thanked the transplantology specialists on behalf of the transplanted patients.
The members of the press asked several questions regarding the number of transplants, costs and presumed consent.
The meeting was followed by a cordial traditional lunch with the occasion of Christmas and the New Year.
